‘Ungli’ is a wonderful title, says Emraan Hashmi

The four vigilantes of ‘Ungli’ team came to grace their Delhi audience and addressed media at a press conference for their upcoming movie which is releasing this Friday.
Emraan Hashmi and Randeep Hooda, who has worked together in films like Jannat 2 and Once Upon a time in Mumbai, will be once again seen entertaining the audience together.
Addressing the media, Emraan Hashmi explained the title of the movie saying, “Earlier the name of the movie and our group was to be called ‘Smile Company’ which was a little abrupt but later Karan Johar changed it to ‘Ungli’ which seemed catchy and appropriate. No doubt, the word has a vulgar meaning but again, it has been used metaphorically in the film which indicates raising a voice against the corrupt and unethical practices prevalent in the society. An ‘Ungli’ situation can be anything from heavy traffic jam, price hikes to corrupt politicians. So, the gang in the movie comes up with their own justice system to fight against such issues. That is why, we have this wonderful title.”
Though ‘Ungli’ shows the gang delivering justice in their own way yet Randeep Hooda expressed, “I do not expect the audience to do the same. Sometimes, I attempt murder in a film but then that is my role. It does not mean I am teaching the audience to learn murder tricks from there. In the movie, we have not used guns to threaten them but just recorded and sent it to media persons and posted online on social networking sites to bring the problems into focus and get it fixed.”
So, the movie is just for entertainment but then Emraan adds, “Through this movie, a common citizen gets a ray of hope that a change can be made in the system though not taking power or law in one’s hands but at least, raise his or her voice against any unethical practice.”
Talking about his ‘Ungli’ moment in real life, Emraan shared an intense incident which took place years ago. “I went to buy a flat in an affluent society in Mumbai where the owner refused to give me one, on the grounds of being a Muslim!  It was when I did ‘Ungli’ to them by complaining to the authorities of the Minority Commission. It made me question the secular notion that we boast about where a Muslim cannot buy a flat in the Hindu housing society.”
A major part of the shooting is shot in Mumbai and Randeep says, “The best part was that we got to see places that we would never have visited otherwise.” Angad Bedi who is also a part of the ‘Ungli’ gang in the film says, “I was a little nervous initially working with them but Emraan made me comfortable and supported me throughout.” Neil Bhoopalam, who had worked with Rensil D’Silva before on the sets of ‘24’, enjoyed being a part of the gang and the plot of the film made him recall the time he watched ‘Rang de Basanti’ with his friends.
Written and directed by Rensil D’Silva, the movie experiments a different set of concept and style, not so common in Bollywood but expects to bring a change in the mind-set of the people. Produced by Karan Johar under the banner of Dharma Productions, the movie starring Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Angad Bedi, Neil Bhoopalam, Sanjay Dutt and Randeep Hooda in lead roles, is releasing on 28th October, 2014.
