‘I’m ghar ka hero for Vishesh’

Emraan Hashmi
Seven years and 27 movies later, Emraan, you must be excited about your upcoming release, Shanghai where you play a very different character.

I had seen Dibakar Banerjee's (director) Khosla Ka Ghosla and have wanted to work with him ever since because I loved what he had done with the concept in that film. He came to me with Shanghai but I had already decided to work with him even before getting the script because I knew it would be something out of the box. It was even more of a bonus when Dibakar told me, 'Oh! I want you to have a paunch and paan stained teeth'. He thought I'd say no because Bollywood heroes generally like to wear designer clothes and serenade the heroine but I told him to go ahead and make my character as grotesque as possible.

Also, the subject is interesting. It's based on a book called Z which was adapted into a film. Everyone has stepped out of their comfort zone in this film whether it is Abhay (Deol), me or Prosenjit Chatterjee.

Now you seem to have lost all the weight you had put on for the film.

Yes. Putting on weight is easy but losing it is quite tough. Dibakar told me to pig out for a month so I had pizzas, pastas, etc. It was great. I used to finish all the food in the fridge. But after that, immediately getting into Jannat 2's character was tough. It took two months of rigorous diet to look fit.

What was your reference point for Jogi?

I've not read the book or seen the earlier movie. Dibakar told me about Z but I wanted to react to the material he had given. The script was rewritten for Shanghai so a lot of things were changed from the original. Jogi shoots a lot of shaadi and porn videos. He happens to be on site when the assassination takes place.
