Emraan Hashmi Ungli Review.

Karan Johar is all set to take his production house down a new path with his latest feature - Ungli. Ungli features Kangana Ranaut, Emraan Hashmi, Randeep Hooda, Neil Bhoopalam and Angad Bedi playing a bunch of vigilantes who decide to fight corruption in the literal sense. They do so with a very hip-hop sense of style and are not above kidnapping cops and making them, again, literally eat money. And they seem to have a ball of a time doing it right up to the moment they run into Inspector Kale played by Sanjay Dutt who is still in his Policegiri avatar. The trailer appears to be a fun filled romp much in the vein of films like Shaitaan and Fugly but falters when it comes to the content. Don’t expect the type of depth you would find in a film like ‘A Wednesday’ and you should be fine. Ungli comes across as simply another movie trying to capitalize on a trending topic and in this case that topic is corruption.

The repeated references to the middle finger serve to drive home the point that Ungli is a very shallow film. Take away the layers of vigilante justice and corruption and you have another Policegiri or Singham. Which may not necessarily be a bad thing, after all.

Emraan shines through as the main protagonist while the rest of the gang seem to fall under regular stereotypes like the wise-cracking guy, the strong-silent type etc. Kangana feels wasted since she barely has a dialogue but then again this is just the trailer. As Shah Rukh so often loves to remind us, ‘picture abhi baaki hai mere dost’. Let’s hope the movie has more to offer than this first trailer of Ungli.

Emraan and Kangana’s Ungli also stars Neha Dhupia in a key role and is slated to release on the 28th of November, 2014.
