Style secrets, from stars’ stylist

Bollywood stylist Aashish Dwyer has films like Gangster, Murder 2, Awaarapan and the upcoming John Day to his credit. Ask him about his experiences in B’town, and he says that he has seen newcomers like Kangna Ranaut and Jacqueline Fernandez transform into the divas they are today. “I styled Kangna for her debut Gangster, which was also my first film” recounts Aashish. “Anurag Basu had seen my previous work and took me on board. Kangna was this new girl who had no clue about how to carry herself so we had to start from scratch. That was some eight years ago. Gangster was one of the first Indian films that experimented with winter wear fashion. I gave her sweaters and deep-necked dresses as she played a bar dancer who lives abroad.”
Jacqueline and Emraan Hashmi are other stars Aashish has styled and he says, “Being a model, Jacqueline has a good sense of fashion. She knew what works on the ramp but we had to add that Bollywood touch, which we did in Murder 2. Emraan is nice to work with; he isn’t fussy. He wore some stylish jackets in Awaarapan and I got some fabulous feedback for that look. ”
As for John Day, Aashish has used a colour palette that goes from white to black for Naseeruddin Shah, to reflect his character’s arc. He sports a formal look with corduroy jackets and stylish ties while Randeep’s look is rugged, with leather jackets. “As it’s an action film, I had to carry 10 pieces of similar clothing, as they can get damaged during stunts and require replacements,” Aashish says.
