Karan Johar and Raveena Tandon's husband Anil Thadani are childhood friends and they had two successful collaborations in the past, 'Agneepath' and 'Student Of The Year'. And now Anil has acquired the all-India theatrical rights to KJo's next four releases, 'Gori Tere Pyar Mein', 'Humpty Dumpty Sharma' and two Emraan Hashmi starrers-'Ungli' and a yet untitled film.
This agreement sees a major shift for KJo's banner as UTV has been their partner of choice for some time now and the partnership has been a successful one, including the hit 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' and the critically acclaimed 'The Lunchbox'.
KJo and Anil's deal has therefore come as a surprise to many, especially since the filmmaker has given the distributor four films, a large chunk of his releases, unlike in the past where he has chosen to partner with him one film at a time.
An industry insider told TOI, "The deal struck is to the tune of Rs 100 crore. Anil and Karan were casually discussing the four forthcoming movies by Karan's company and within minutes, they both had struck the deal. It was a mutual decision. Even the money was not debated much."
When we quizzed the source about KJo's decision to not have a corporate partner for as many as four releases, we were told, "There is no friction between Karan and UTV. In the recent past Karan has sold the theatrical rights to different people. Now he has sold it entirely to Thadani. But then everything can't remain the same forever. The modalities worked out well with Thadani."
When we contacted UTV, asking them whether Karan had offered the four films to them, they chose not to respond to our query. Trade circles told TOI that though the amount to be paid by Thadanai is "hefty", the deal looks to be a "win-win situation" for both.
