Shooting for intimate scenes may be a child's game for Emraan Hashmi, but for his co-star in Ek Thi Daayan Huma Qureshi, it proved to be quite tough to get the actgoing.
Incidentally, somehow her discomfort happened to rub off on Emraan Hashmi as well.
Huma Qureshi, who plays Emraan Hashmi's wife in Ek Thi Daayan , apparently had to shoot an erotic scene withthe actor.
A source said, "Huma was aware of the scene where she has to get intimate with her husband and even lock lips. It was an integral part ofthe story and she was fine with it."
The source added, "Emraan too became nervous. However he made her comfortable. After a couple of retakes, it came out well."
Director of the movie Kannan Iyer said, "It is just yet another scene for us although I too was apprehensive. But we shouldtreat it like a regular action or comedy scene. And as faras nervousness is concerned, I feel it is normal. While doing emotionally high-strung scenes, every actor feels nervous for the first time."
Actor Emraan Hashmi says he would rather play the character in his films than just be an actor.
Horror is here to stay
Actor Emraan Hashmi, on his first visit to Allahabad, attended the Kumbh Mela with Huma Qureshi and Ekta Kapoor. In Allahabad for the promotion of Ek Thi Daayan, a horror thriller, Emraan says horror as a genre is here to stay.
"Numbers go in favour of horror films. Raaz 3 had a great opening and did great business. A huge chunk of the audience wants to come to theatres to get scared. The excitement is palpable in both comedy and horror, but is missing in drama. So, that's the reason I prefer horror over drama because the audiences reaction is immediate. Horror makes people jump out of their seats. There is a misconception about spooky films being dependent on special effects, but the best of horror films, right from The Exorcist to The Omen, never used special effects, though the visual effects in the form of makeup was there. In India, a film like Raaz3 has upped the bar in terms of visual effects in horror and Ek Thi Daayan will do it further. Horror is now part of mainstream cinema in India, which was not so till a few years back," he says.
Not comfortable with the familiar
Known for his association with the Bhatt camp, Emraan is now a regular in Ekta Kapoor's films. However, according to the actor, "Comfort zone kills an actor. The more uncomfortable you are, the better you act, the more cushy you get, the worse you get as an actor. I have seen it happening to myself. The films which I was comfortable doing and was confident about, did not fare well at the BO. Though repeating the people with whom I work, like for instance Ekta (Kapoor) with whom I have done three films, is more about sharing a rapport rather than being in a comfort zone. We have moved on from being cushy and comfortable because in each of the three films we have done together, whether it was Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, The Dirty Picture and now Ek Thi Daayan, we have experimented with different genres," says Emraan.
Opposites attract
Emraan, who has worked in two films with Vidya Balan, both of which were women-centric films, says that playing second-fiddle has never crossed his mind. "I am an extremely secure actor and my career graph is not dependent on any one component of the film. I have the courage and conviction to work in a film which other stars may hesitate to be associated with. Though as an artiste, I would like to do biopics and especially films like The Aviator. It remains a dream role for me," he says.
The actor who would be teaming up with Kareena Kapoor in Karan Johar and Ekta Kapoor's joint venture, further adds, "The film, which is an edgy love story, will go on floors at the end of this year. It could be a strange pairing but odd couples are far more sexy, the chemistry between them is more interesting which is why Bollywood is going out of the way to cast such actors together. The Dirty Picture is the best example of this where I was paired opposite Vidya. The audiences' response confirmed that odd couples do create magic," he says.
Who is stupid enough to get into the middle of Mumbai’s busy railway stations to shoot films? Well, it seems the makers of ‘Ghanchakkar’ are. The film, which stars Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan, is an intense film but has a lot of comedy that is not forced. One sixth of the film which is being directed by Raj Kumar Gupta for UTV has been shot at railway stations and in local trains, resulting in mayhem. The shooting happened over 63 days. Fortunately for everyone, most of these shots were taken on Sundays when the crowds are less chaotic. Nevertheless, as expected, it was utter chaos when Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan stepped out to shoot in the locals. We wonder if the makers of the film should be given the tag of ‘ghanchakkar’.
Emraan Hashmi who’s going international with Oscar-winning director Danis Tanovic’s film — tentatively titled White Lies — will star alongside Bond girl Maryam D’Abo in it.
The actress had starred as Kara Milovy in the 1987 James Bond film The Living Daylights, which was Timothy Dalton’s first outing as Bond. Tanovic’s team is currently shooting for their upcoming film in Patiala.
Produced by Cedomir Kolar and Marx with Prashita Chaudhary and Guneet Monga, the film will apparently be D’Abo’s big screen outing after several years post her successful recovery from a surgery for brain hemorrhage in 2007, though the Brit actress did work on a documentary on the medical condition.
Producer Guneet Monga confirmed that the Bond girl will indeed be a part of the film. “Yes Maryam is doing the film and we are delighted to have her in it,” says Guneet.
Emraan Hashmi is probably the most understated A-listerin Bollywood, content to do his work and not blow his trumpet. He gives us an inner view of his work ethic, films and the role he is avidly waiting for.
Ek Thi Daayan’s release is round the corner. It’s very important since it’s my first release this year. It’s a fascinating script, a supernatural thriller; deals with witches. It’s based on folklore. My state of mind is the same as before every film, confused and scared.
How was it working on Danis (No Man’s Land) Tanovic’s An Episode In the life of An Iron Picker?
I thought Danis, who has won over 46 awards for his first film, would be quite controlling on the sets. On the contrary, he leaves the stage open for an actor’s thoughts and interpretation. And that comes from inner confidence. We shot the filmin 45 days, people over hereshoot for 100 – 150 days, and sometimes still end up making trash. I like Danis’ sense of humour, it’s like mine, very dark and sarcastic.
And playing a suave conmanin Ghanchakkar.
Ghanchakkar is a very interesting story that came to me a year back and I still tell Raj (Kumar Gupta) that’s the longest narration I have ever had. I took three loo breaks; it was almost a four hour narration. It’s a quirky comedy with dark humour.
Everyone wants a piece of Emraan now
I don’t know, but it’s scary. But I’ve now reached a stage in my career where I can steer the way I’m going.Right now I’ve started getting interesting offers.
You have done both grey and comic characters. What do you prefer?
I generally like grey roles. My interpretation of drama isdifferent from the popular perception. Acting, for me is not about over playing, it is about concealing. I like flawed characters that people relate to. I would never do a romcom.
None of your films have touched 100 crore (billion), does it disappoint you?
What is the meaning of 100 crore (billion), if you have made the film for 70 crore and marketed it for 50 crore. There is a greater sense of victory when a film like mine, “Raaz” which is made for 15 crore, marketed for 10 crore, makes 85 crore. It might have missed the 100-crore mark, but it’s made five times the profit. I wouldn’t gun for 100 crore because you’ve got to do trashy mainstream cinema for that, which I don’t like.
How cool is your wife with your intimate scenes on screen?
Not cool at all. In fact she hates it. But she doesn’t want me to be in a situation where I take a decision on her insistence and then my career plummets. She won’t be able to forgive herself. I get slapped around by her with every release. That’s the price I have to pay so I never watch my films with her in the theatre.
Any role that you are eagerly waiting for?
I am waiting for the right action film. I was rejecting comedies for the past five years before “ Ghanchakkar” because I didn’t find them funny. Now I’m waiting for the right action film.
Kalki Koechlin, who played a social activist in Shanghai, had a much hyped and talked about kissing scene with her co-star Prosenjit Chatterjee, but she says shemissed the chance to kiss the "serial kisser Emraan Hashmi".
"The script was such in Shanghai that there was no scope of a kiss. And in Ek Thi Daayan , again I missed the chance to kiss Emraan. Ithink he doesn't like my face and it's getting complexday by day," laughed Kalki who was in Pune on Tuesday with her Ek Thi Daayan co-stars Emraan and Huma Qureshi.
With Sanjay Dutt’s impending surrender now less than two weeks away, everyone’s scurrying to wrap up their shoots with the actor (see box). So after Aamir Khan shuffled his dates (he was meant to be shooting for Dhoom:3) to shoot for Rajkumar Hirani’s P.K., now Emraan Hashmi too will be doing the
